Great campsites in the non-electric loop (campsites numbered in the 80's). Plenty of room to spread out. We rented four spots, ended up realizing the ground was too hard at the flattest spot of each site for tent stakes (seems to be an old gravel pad about 2" below dirt). Gotta get creative and sleep on a slight incline, but that's camping! Fire pits all have swivel grills, each site has a picnic table. Bathrooms are about a block away, and are sooo clean.
Elk Rock is a beautiful park and the camping spots are well kept. Loved the firepit and how clean it was! I also loved how the spots were pull through and well graveled. The whole circle camping area was all pull through spots with a big open field in the middle, perfect for a volleyball net. The bathrooms were also clean and the showers had high pressure and hot water, a big plus. Oh and it is close to Knoxville and Pella! We did a lot of running around and it was convenient to come back to rest at Elk Rock for lunch or dinner and then go back into town. My family definitely plans on going back for another enjoyable weekend camping.
Maps took us to the boat ramp not the actual park... And it tried to take us through a corn field... Other then that it was a neat little spot. The shore was pretty and I found a few intact fresh water clam shells.
Another great hidden gem. Camping, fishing, hiking, biking, and beautiful scenery. We have been visiting as many as we can this summer and marking some for return trips. This is one of the returns. We had a limited time to explore, and used most of it fishing. Will be back and will bring our small boat for better exploring next time. Clean campsites and easy to find.
Very nice well kept park! Nice electrical sites with plenty of space for the family. Cute little playgrounds for small kids. Clean bathrooms and showers that are very nice. Campsites have mature trees with nice shade. New boat ramp into lake red rock. Glad we found this great state park.. Highly recommended it for anyone who wants to camp near Lake red rock.
Great place. Two boat ramps. The west one is super busy. Not the best place to launch kayaks but do-able. Probably ok on week days. The paddle from the west ramp to the east is scenic. Well worth the time and effort
This park is very good for horse riders. The best views are for boaters. The walkers must share trails with horses and will get dusty/dirty.
Very nice state park. Stayed in the campground for four nights while attending an event in nearby Knoxville and never had any issues.
Stayed at site 85 which was sizeable and had pretty good privacy for a tent site. Beautiful spot to star gaze and enjoy the quiet sounds of Iowa.
The showers were warm and had nice water pressure. The restrooms (flush toilets) were a bit outdated and not the cleanest, but still quite usable and nice to have nearby.
